Project Description

Improvisation Summit of Portland

June 4th, 2015 – June 6th, 2015

Disjecta hosts the Creative Music Guild’s Improvisation Summit of Portland, which returns for its fourth iteration from June 4th-6th. A unique event in Portland’s festival landscape, the Improvisation Summit of Portland (ISP) is a multi-day performance festival featuring the best in creative, improvised, and experimental music. With a focus on large ensemble performances and collective experimentation, the festival presents local and visiting musicians in collaboration with dancers, filmmakers, and other artists.

Founded in 2012 by the Creative Music Guild, the ISP grew out of a desire to bring together Portland’s strongest performers with musicians from around the world. This year, internationally-renowned saxophonist and composer Roscoe Mitchell comes to Portland for the first time in more than two decades to perform solo, conduct a workshop, lead a large ensemble, and have his pieces performed. In addition, New York-based musician Jonah Parzen-Johnson will be performing on baritone sax and analog synthesizer. Local performers include Jonathan Sielaff, Rich Halley, The Tenses, Get Smashing Love Power (members of Blue Cranes and Grammies), Brumes, Secret Drum Band, Gordon Ashworth, Arrington di Dionyso, ALTO!, Matt Carlson, Catfish (members of Blue Cranes), Rich & Caron Halley with Dan Raphael, FAXES, and Doug Detrick.

Panel presentations and workshops will also be held in conjunction with festival events.
