Assigned Edges is an examination of Design and the everyday through the lens of figure-ground organization. Figure-ground organization is a visual process that identifies focal points and background based on contrast. By assigning edges to our perceptual field, we are simultaneously defining and obscuring its elements. In effect, forms or figures are contextually defined by what they are not. The interdependent and mutable conditions of this relationship are also found in the connection between Design and the everyday.
Design is a reaction to the everyday. Its applied logic strives for clarification and satisfaction (of a condition or need) amidst the contingencies of experience. At the same time, Design is normative. It presents a particular view among an array of possible solutions which has specific effects on the structure and convention of the everyday.
Each of these relationships express both resolute certainty and enigmatic impossibility. Their concurrently complimentary and oppositional quality points to the complexities of determination in inherently unstable territory. At the Vestibule, Von Tundra’s Assigned Edges materializes the complicated effort to name the unknown.
