Tired of reading the same stale papers, the babbling blogs and hearing the same old voices tell you what's going on in your city? Take the mic and make it yours! Disjecta presents CORE Radio, a platform for community voices to offer their perspective on the pressing cultural issues facing Portland.

CORE Radio Questions:

We’ve come up with six broad topics for investigation and three poignant, shall we even say taboo, questions to act as springboards for your imagination. They fall into the three main categories outlined below.

A) Neighborhoods

Neighborhoods are shifting, people are moving, things are changing rapidly here. Some call it gentrification, others call it beautification, still others call it progress; we want to hear what you call it. Pick one of these three areas and do an in-depth exposé on it.

       1- Lower Burnside
       2- 82nd Ave.
       3- North Portland

B) Human Interest

These three questions are what life is made of, the juicy bits that hold everything else together. Give us your specific take on these meaningful topics.

4- What does love look like in Portland?
5- What is your favorite or least favorite spot in Portland?
6- How do people make money in Portland? How do you make money?

C) Heavy Hitters

These questions are for the intrepid journalist inside us all. They are key questions for the arts and culture community—critical observations on the shifting dynamics of Portland’s cultural infrastructure.

7- Pacific Northwest College of Art has turned the corner from provincial art college to potential arts juggernaut under the helm of Tom Manly. With the acquisition of the 511 Federal Building and Museum of Contemporary Craft, PNCA has expanded rapidly. But is it too much, too fast? Can PNCA become a nationally recognized fine arts college? How? Or will the school merely be the next arts farm, popping out wild-eyed, mediocre talent onto the hard streets of reality? Will the newly minted MFA program produce real talent? Has the college extended itself too far in an uncertain economy? Let’s take a hard look at the ambitious agenda of PNCA—an agenda filled with both immense promise and potential problems.

8- Mayor Sam Adams had the world at his fingertips and now, with the emergence of a sex and lies scandal, he’s plummeted back down to the realm of sullied politician. Many in the arts community viewed Mayor Adams as a savior, someone who was willing to go the extra mile to ensure increased funding for arts and culture. Should the arts community continue to unabashedly support Sam Adams? Will he actually be able to follow through with his promise to support the arts? Can Mayor Adams redeem himself or is he better suited for an episode of Jerry Springer?

9- Milepost 5 is an ambitious development project that aims to build an arts enclave in outer Southeast Portland. What do you make of the “intentional arts community” concept located on NE 82nd Avenue? Should developers wade into the arts equation or do you prefer to build your own arts communities? Have any of Milepost 5’s promises been fulfilled? Is it just the economy that’s stalled the project or are there deeper problems? How can the project rebound? What benefit can Milepost 5 have for the arts community? Are artists being given generous opportunities to exhibit work or are they being used as marketing rag-dolls to try and sell condos? How does this all shake out in your estimation? For more on Milepost 5 the project, visit www.milepostfive.com.

Here's how it works: We ask a question. You send us your proposal for how you would tackle the question(s) posed. Be tactful, be clever, be honest, be yourself. We then select 2-3 people to participate in creating an audio map by recording themselves, their friends, even their cats, to offer perspective on the topic at hand. We provide the equipment and the training to get you started. You come back in one week with everything you gathered and we'll edit it down and podcast it. Pretty simple, right? So, tell us what you think, who you want to talk to and where you might go to compile an answer to any of the questions outlined below.
