THE QUIET MUSIC FESTIVAL OF PORTLAND
June 26th, 2015 – June 27th, 2015
Now with air conditioning! On June 26th and 27th, 2015, Chris Johanson’s fifth annual Quiet Music Festival of Portland will once again transform contemporary art space Disjecta into a tranquil cave of sonic serenity. Tuning in and zonking out are equally encouraged as this year’s line-up takes you through soft sets tailored to the festival’s ethos while you float on a sea of plush surfaces.
Celebrating the power of turning the dial down, the lowest-key festival in the land spans two nights in Portland and will feature Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks, Secret Drum Band, Sonny Smith, Timmy Straw, Peacers, Irma Vep, Linda Hagood, Conditioner, Ilyans Amhed, Amenta Abioto, Rebecca Gates, and Sun Foot.
This year QMF warms up with special sets in Seattle at ALL RISE by Sonny and the Sunsets, HITS, Irma Vep, Amenta Abioto, and Sun Foot.
Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks will again grace their hometown with an acoustic set curated just for the festival. Sonny Smith will be performing Sunsets tunes, alongside unreleased new material.
“In place of booming drums and cymbals, radically different instrumentation will introduce new textures, bringing attention to our rhythms and arrangements in this shifted dynamic” by Secret Drum Band (Lisa Schonberg, Sam Humans (Modern State), Alison Clary (Tiburones), Heather Treadway (Explode into Colors), Sara Lund (Unwound/Hungry Ghost), Allan Wilson (!!!/Trina Shaghafi).
Peacers is a new venture by Mike Donovan (Sic Alps), Eric Park (Curse of the Birthmark) and Wendy Farina (T.I.T.S). Amenta Abioto’s raw improvisational live performances invoke elements of both theatrical surprise and magic through ancient African diasporic sounds and stories.
Local musician Rebecca Gates (Spinanes) will guide us through her experiments of “looking for space and air in the lines”. A quieter Linda Hagood brings her voice and musical vision to light with sweet hearted whimsy and joy.
Conditioner, a new band from Tom Greenwood (Jackie O Motherfucker) and Dana Dart-McLean and will accompany their guitars with sculpture by Dart-McLean and Portland artist Morgan Ritter.
The U.K.’s mercurial songwriting talent Irma Vep’s performance exists as part of an “evolving drama.” Academy of American Poets recognized writer, composer and pianist Timmy Straw will perform her eponymous solo project. Ilyas Ahmed will perform rare unamplified set with an acoustic 12 string guitar and vocals.
Chris Johanson, Brian Mumford (Dragging an Ox Through Water), and Ron Burns’ (Smog) Sun Foot quietly excite with effervescent, positive, and peaceful jams. Mississippi Records’ Eric I returns to helm the festival’s DJ booth and spin copious amounts of medicinal vinyl.
The festival will be recorded by Seth Lorinczi (2-Track Mind Studio) using a vintage 2-track 1/4” tape deck. Past recordings can be found at quietmusicfestivalofportland.bandcamp.com. The technology is old, clunky and obsolete, but the recordings capture the special hush and tranquility of the QMF.
This year’s accompanying exhibition will highlight the work of Manchester-based illustration, designer, and printmaker Lucy Jones. Jones will also create a small run of posters for each band in the festival that will be available for purchase over the weekend. http://www.lucysjones.com/
